For over twenty years, beginning in the early 1980's, the Islamic, Arab government of Sudan attacked, bombed, raped, tortured and killed the black African people of Southern Sudan...not unlike what is happening today in the Darfur region. Millions were killed, maimed or made refugees. For those of us hearing or reading media reports, the most common words describing the situation were famine, war, ethnic cleansing, terrorism, religious persecution and genocide.

In 2004, under intense international pressure, the attacks subsided for the most part and a window of opportunity opened for Mustard Seed International (MSI) and other organizations to enter this devastate region.

The following statistics on Southern Sudan were complied and published by UNICEF that same year:

  • Infant mortality rate 15%
  • Child mortality rate 25%
  • Only 5% of births were attended by trained health care workers
  • One in nine mothers die during pregnancy or childbirth
  • The prevalence of diarrhea in children under the age of five is 45%, acute respiratory infection 30% and malaria 61%
  • The prevalence of general malnutrition 48% and severe malnutrition or wasting was 21%
  • Southern Sudan has only one doctor per 100,000 people.
  • Most of these statistics represent the worst rates found in the entire world and are many times those found in the surrounding African countries.

Because every day counts...for eternity...the message of hope, found only in Jesus Christ, needed to be proclaimed among the people of Southern Sudan. The platform by which this could be accomplished was determined by MSI to be through the building of a medical facility to be know as the Akot Medical Mission.

Construction began in late 2005 and on October 1, 2006, the Akot Medical Mission opened its door to receive patients. Since that day, tens of thousands of inpatients and outpatients have received care from our team of expatriate and indigenous staff. Mustard Seed is heeding God's call to minister to the people of Southern Sudan at their point of greatest need. Through medicine, we desire to be God's instrument of love and care to the lost and hurting people of Southern Sudan.

The Akot Medical Mission is one of the largest medical ministries Mustard Seed has ever embarked upon. As you can see in the pictures, much has been accomplished in the first phase of construction. But, there is much left to do. For that reason, and on behalf of the suffering people of Southern Sudan, we ask for your help.

Mustard Seed is at a critical point and we need you to stand with us in our efforts to complete the hospital. We have yet to begin construction on a second outpatient building, a short-term team and staff housing building and, of major importance, the surgery building. We need you to pray with us for God's guidance. May His will be done in this far away and often forgotten place.

A plaque hangs above the door of the William Carey Baptist Church in Calcutta, India....

"Attempt Great Things For God - Expect Great Things From God."

In God's name we are indeed attempting a great mission work in Southern Sudan. By faith, we are expecting His provision. Our task in this is not to be a fund raiser and depend on our abilities or strength to accomplish anything...but, our task is to make the need known and have confidence that God can and will take care of the rest.

Please pray, asking God what He might have you do in proclaiming the Gospel to the people of Southern Sudan.
